This partly depends on your budget, of course! It also depends upon the number of guests you have at your wedding reception, corporate event or other function.
In addition, it is affected by whether the guests are seated at tables, or are in a drinks reception.
When guests are standing, in a reception, then the average group size is about 6-7 people. With about 100 guests, the magician has approximately 15/16 groups to entertain.
In a 2 hour booking each group would see approximately 2 high impact effects. Each one of these has multiple magic moments built in. Mike varies the tricks around the room. As a rough rule of thumb, the ideal number of effects that guests like to see is about three. One is definitely too little! Guests’ appetites are whetted. Two is satisfactory, but, rather like a good meal, three courses are ideal!! The first effect grabs people’s attention. They want to see more. The magician then follow up with a few other effects, spread over the duration of the booking- not all in one go!! So for three effects per group, one needs a booking of 3 hours where there are about 100 guests, standing, or seated, in smaller groups.
Where guests are having a formal meal, then the numbers usually work out differently. Tables often seat between 8 and 10 guests. So 100 guests might be spread between 10 – 13 tables. At a function of this size there are always some tables of guests waiting for their next course. The magician entertains these groups, and moves on to other tables as the food arrives. With 100 guests, seated for a meal, 2 hours may be sufficient, or possibly 2.5 hours to entertain each table well and do about 3 effects per table over the period of the booking.
Many clients wish to provide entertainment over several parts of a function. Mike’s commonest bookings are for entertaining in these combinations:
- the drinks reception, followed by table hopping in the meal
- the end of the meal, followed by the period of time before the live music or DJ
- Other combinations are possible, of course!
